Since I was a small child, I remember looking intently at things. I would become fixed on the limitless ways I could experience an object visually. Squinting at streetlights from my bedroom window, I would travel through the planes of focus with my eyes. I put myself to sleep this way growing up. It was not until college, that I discovered the tool needed to tap this visual fixation with the world. Cameras simply were not part of my household. Pictures of my sister and I growing up hardly exist. I took a 35mm manual camera with a 50mm lens with me to study in Germany in 1997. I had no idea how to use it, but it had a brilliant manual with a chart, that explained the relationship between aperture and shutter speed. The math made perfect sense, and I proceeded to shoot countless rolls of film on my solo travels from Prague to the ridge of the Matterhorn in the swiss Alps. The irony and symbolism that had drawn me to literature began playing out in my viewfinder --fleeting moments in foreign cities. With the images from that first trip, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I studied photojournalism at the University of Georgia in Athens and worked through school shooting and writing for the local alternative weekly. I covered the eclectic culture of Athens for two years: unforgettable music, quirky politics and painful stories about violence, poverty and drug addiction. I moved to Jackson, Wyoming in 1999 to work as a photographer and writer at the local paper. I began freelancing full time in 2002 and have shot projects across the US, Latin America, Europe and Asia. I write this as an unbelievably fortunate photographer, father and husband, living in the Greater Yellowstone of western Wyoming. I believe that we are living during a period of huge evolutionary decisions. What a fascinating time in history to be an artist . . . Please feel free to contact me to start a conversation about your next project. Whether stills or cinema, photojournalism or commercial production, I bring a vision and a history of award-winning excellence to the field every time. |
